Conference in Sofia for European Capital of Cultures

On May 27, 2011 at the Sheraton Hotel in Sofia was held the conference on European capitals of culture. It was organized jointly by Sofia Municipality, Sofia Development Association, the partner initiative " Soul for Europe" and the Foundation for Urban Projects and Research.

 

On May 27, 2011 at the Sheraton Hotel in Sofia was held the conference on European capitals of culture. It was organized jointly by Sofia Municipality, Sofia Development   Association, the  partner initiative " Soul for Europe" and the Foundation for Urban Projects and Research.

The event started with greetings from the mayor of Sofia - Mrs. Yordanka Fandakova, the Minister of Culture - Mr. Rashidov, His Excellency Mr.Stefano Benatsio, Ambassador of Italy in Bulgaria and others. The conference was attended by managers and artistic directors of city holders of the title European Capital of Culture, who shared the difficulties and the challenges that they faced, and also members of committees for the preparation of the Bulgarian and the Italian cities in 2019, representatives of various civic organizations, municipal councilors, business associations, representatives of public institutions, cultural producers and journalists.

The conference was held in 3 main panels on various topics. In the first panel were discussed issues concerning the nature of the program of European Capital of Culture, the program’s contribution to the cultural development of the cities, the implementation of cooperation and the possible conflicts between artistic and political purposes. Special attention was paid to the importance of the tourism initiative, the build of a vision and concept of the candidates. In the second panel was debated the inclusion  of the civil society in the initiative and the role of the stakeholders for a successful initiative. In the last stage of the conference was concerned with the issues of the sustainability and the legacy that the program leaves behind.

Widely discussed issues were the international cooperation and the exchange of experiences, the active participation of the citizens (especially the young and dynamic population), their work with the local authorities, the business and the NGOs.
